CTBrec is still being maintained

The original CTBrec GitHub repository was removed after a DMCA notice, but that does not mean the software is abandoned. The current J62 fork has its own code and download hosting. Version 5.4.7 was released on August 25, 2026 with a Stripchat recording fix.

That distinction matters. Obskura is a CTBrec alternative, not a replacement for dead software. CTBrec remains a useful choice for people who want a free, open-source recorder and are comfortable with its setup and interface.

Where Obskura is easier

Obskura is built around a shorter daily workflow: paste a channel URL, leave monitoring enabled, and let recordings appear as MP4 files. Target priorities, bulk pause and resume controls, activity logs, disk-space monitoring, and automatic reconnect handling are available in the same desktop app.

Remote Access also lets you watch your own recordings from a phone or another computer through an encrypted connection. Visual and speech search help you find a specific moment later without opening every long recording.

When CTBrec is the better choice

Choose CTBrec if free and open source is the deciding factor, you only need its listed cam sites, or you already rely on its client/server workflow. Its active community fork and long history are real strengths.

Choose Obskura if you want a simpler installer, mainstream platforms such as Twitch, TikTok, YouTube, and Kick alongside supported cam sites, phone viewing, and a searchable recording library.
