About Obskura
A secure DVR for your favorite streamers.
Obskura automatically records livestreams while you're away, so you never miss a moment. Recordings stay on your device — private, local, and fully under your control.
Built for viewers who value reliability and privacy over cloud lock-in. No uploads, no tracking of your content, and no middlemen between you and the streams you care about.
Why I built this
I was using old, unmaintained free software to record streams, and it was missing the quality-of-life stuff I kept wishing for — I didn't want to sift through recordings one by one to see if anything was worth keeping. So I started building what I actually wanted to use.
Now I use Obskura every day. It's faster and more reliable than what I had before, and that's the bar I hold it to.
What's next for Obskura
Right now I'm in research and development on smarter recordings — exploring what's actually feasible with more ML models in the pipeline. The ideas on the table are clip search (finding the exact moment you remember from a stream without scrubbing through hours of video) and, further out, automatic clipping so highlights surface themselves.
No promises on timelines yet — this phase is about figuring out what works well enough to ship. The goal is simple: less time sifting, more time watching what actually matters.
Where the money goes
Obskura is run by one developer — me. Subscriptions cover the boring but necessary stuff: servers, code-signing certificates, and the time it takes to keep the app fast and reliable. Down the line, if things grow, I'd like to bring on another developer so the project can move faster.
Beyond that, I want this to fund things that matter outside of software. Helping friends or people close to me cover a medical bill, a treatment they can't afford, or just picking up the tab when someone needs a break. A small thing to cheer someone up. Spreading a bit of happiness and better health around where I can.
I also want Obskura to fund my next project: an app focused on social group discovery in Puerto Rico. Finding activities and people to do them with here is harder than it should be, and loneliness is a real problem — not just on the island, but in a lot of places. If it works here, I'd love to take it further.
So if you subscribe: thank you. You're not just paying for an app — you're helping make all of that possible.
